The forktail blue-eye is a small rainbowfish from the rainforest streams of eastern Papua New Guinea. Adults reach about 2 inches (5–6 cm). Males show bright yellow fins, a forked tail, and the vivid blue eye ring that gives the group its name. Many hobbyists still know it by its older scientific names, Popondetta furcata and Popondichthys furcatus.
They are peaceful, active schooling fish that suit a planted community tank. Males spar and display almost constantly, which makes a small group one of the liveliest sights in a nano or mid-sized aquarium.
